Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that usually affects the lining of the lungs, but can also occur in the lining of the abdomen or heart. The primary cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used in construction and other industries until the 1970s. Other risk factors may include exposure to radiation, genetics, and certain viruses. Symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath, and abdominal swelling, and diagnosis is typically made through imaging tests and biopsies. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
